Learn how to make “The Elbum,” a fun and clever album structure which holds its pages by gripping them into a series of articulated narrow pockets. A treasure of paper engineering, this project is also a great introduction to concertina folding by hand.
This technique is perfect to create an evolving portfolio, an artist’s book, or an original album.
Delphine Platten has a master’s degree in philosophy and has always been passionate about books and the technical approach of working with different materials. In 2004, freshly arrived in Montréal QC she met Odette Drapeau, a key figure in the creative binding world, who became her mentor. She started her apprenticeship under Odette’s direction and then worked in her studio for more than 5 years. Delphine completed her training by obtaining a collegial diploma in art conservation techniques.
While working, Delphine followed several workshops in Québec and France, as well as completing a post graduate short-program in cultural organizations management in HEC-Montréal. After two years of work in paper preservation, she opened her bookbinding and custom-made boxes studio in fall 2017.
Since 2011 she has participated in about twenty collective exhibitions, here and abroad. In 2016 she presented her first solo exhibition at the HEC-Montréal library and, in 2018, she was one of the finalists for the François-Houdé Award, which promotes creative excellence within Montréal’s arts and crafts community.
Her creations are now part of the collection of the National Library and Archives of Québec. For more information, see www.delphineplatten.com or follow her at https://www.instagram.com/delphineplattenreliure/ and https://www.facebook.com/DelphinePlattenReliure/
