Chinese thread books are a form of folk art made by ethnic Chinese groups to hold threads, needles, patterns and other bits and pieces. The books contain many ingeniously folded compartments that unfold layer by layer.
Although the books look complicated, they are not difficult to make and can be adapted by adding art and journals. Participants will be making the 13-compartment book in the photo above.
Gabriele Lundeen first encountered CBBAG through Bookbinding I, eight or so years ago. She had just finished her first year at the Ontario College of Art and Design, decided that further work there was not what she wanted, and was looking around for something else as a creative vehicle. She soon became engrossed in making books and is an aspiring book artist. She is a former librarian and management consultant. She is intrigued by the idea of allowing viewers to explore pockets and other enclosures in books.
